Meet Jennifer DeCaro

I am a retired police officer, and after 25 years in the profession, I have plenty of stories about the “fun” stuff people usually want to hear: vehicle pursuits, suspect chases, and the physically demanding moments that make for dramatic storytelling. But what most people don’t expect are the stories I value most, the ones about strengthening the business of law enforcement by investing in people at every opportunity.

The trials and triumphs of recovering a revoked state accreditation, the sleepless nights that came with developing and managing more than 500 policies and procedures, the project management required to oversee and implement dozens of projects, and the genuine joy of teaching team members how to weave those practices into their daily work. How building a workforce from the moment you recruit a teammate until the last day they are with your organization taught me powerful lessons about interpersonal skills, problem-solving, and how people truly want to learn to do their jobs.

When I connect with others, I often share that I’m a fan of Simon Sinek’s leadership teachings, especially Start with Why. My own “why” has always been rooted in service. I want to make a positive impact, both within the community I served and for the clients who now serve their own communities. When I lead with my core values of service, integrity, and perseverance, I do my best work.

After retiring, I earned a project management certification from the Project Management Institute and began searching for work that would bring me the same sense of purpose I felt in public service. The spark came unexpectedly. One day, while listening to my husband describe a training incident that had gone wrong, I said out loud, “I could’ve prevented that.” In that moment, I realized I could use the knowledge and experience I’d built over more than 30 years to help organizations avoid those pitfalls and strengthen their teams. That realization became the foundation of DeCaro Consulting.
